IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Denver men’s golf team was able to close out the first day of the Hawkeye Invitational in seventh on Saturday. The Pioneers posted a first-round score of 294, putting them in ninth through 18 holes.

Play was suspended in round two due to darkness after a weather delay held up the field in the afternoon.

Par for the 7,200-yard course was 72.

Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Petter Mikalsen, Jake Kelley, Chris Korte, Eric Hagen and Isaac Petersilie.

No. 11 Texas Tech leads the field through the first day of the tournament. The Red Raiders currently hold a three-stroke advantage over No. 43 Kansas.

“The weather didn’t allow us to play 36 holes today so we are going to play between 23-27 holes tomorrow to complete this tournament,” Billinger said. “I am proud of the guys for handling all the adversity like professionals.”

Korte had it going in the opening round, firing an even-par 72, which consisted of four birdies. The Littleton, Colo. native went 2-under in the first nine holes he played. Before having to stop for the day, Korte was 2-under through 12 in his second round on the course.

“Today’s conditions were tough with the wind and some late rain,” Korte said.  “I felt great about today though, especially on the greens. The team is so close to playing well as a whole and I think tomorrow could be our day to make a move.”

Petersilie wrapped up his first day in a tie for 35th at 3-over. The freshman put up a 1-over 73 in the first round of the morning and was 2-over through 12 holes in the afternoon session.

Kelley closed out Saturday tied for 51st at 5-over-par.

Mikalsen started strong but had a rough 12 holes in the second round, resulting in him being tied for 58th. The senior opened with a solid 73 in his first run through of the course.

Hagen sits in a tie for 64th.

Johan Werge, competing as an individual, tied for 76th.

The end of the second and the entire third round are set for Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 CT.
