Hagen Fires 1-under as Pioneers Close ASU Thunderbird Invitational

April 15, 2018

TEMPE, Ariz. – Led by another great round from Eric Hagen, the University of Denver men’s golf team closed the ASU Thunderbird Invitational strong on Sunday, placing 10th. The Pioneers shot a team total of 292 for their final round.

Hagen once again tied a career low, shooting a 1-under 70 for a second straight day.

DU’s 54-hole total of 868 (292-284-292) was its third lowest of the year.

Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Chris Korte, Jake Kelley, Jackson Solem, John Sand and Hagen.

Par for the 7,032-yard course was 71 at the Karsten Golf Course.

“Today was really close and I’m proud of the guys for continuing to compete and give it their best effort,” Billinger said. “Counting a 77 today hurt, but overall, we played well and beat a lot of good teams.

“Hagen played great the last two rounds. Chris played brilliantly most of the time and Jake played solid all week. It was a confidence-building week and I’m excited to watch these guys compete at the Summit League Championship.”

No. 25 Arizona State won the team title after a final-round push of 4-under, narrowly holding off 27th-ranked UNLV by one stroke.

Hagen’s 1-under effort put him in a tie for 34th with fellow teammate Korte, with the duo both shooting 3-over for the two-day event.

Korte found himself rolling on the back nine, shooting 3-under and closing with two birdies.

Kelley finished tied for 41st in his first tournament in nearly two months, posting a 4-over for his three rounds of play.

Sand slipped into a tie for 52nd, ending his tournament at 7-over.

Solem wrapped up his day 82nd.

The Crimson and Gold now get ready for the Summit League Championship on Apr. 29 in Newton, Kan.
