Denver Finishes Seventh After Strong Final Round at Hawkeye Invitational

April 16, 2017

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Denver men’s golf team turned in one of its best performances of the season on Sunday at the Hawkeye Invitational, firing a season-low even-par 288. The terrific team round put the Pioneers in seventh to finish up the tournament.

Par for the 7,200-yard course was 72.

Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Petter Mikalsen, Jake Kelley, Chris Korte, Eric Hagen and Isaac Petersilie.

No. 11 Texas Tech took home the team title with an overall score of 9-under, four strokes ahead of host Iowa.

“At one point we were 6-under and it was great to see this team really get it going,” Billinger said. “Even par as a team today is impressive with how windy it was out there. I’m very proud of how focused they played.”

Korte led the way for the DU, recording his first top-10 finish on the year with a final-round 72 (even par) to put him in a tie for sixth. The junior’s three-round total for the tournament was 214 (72-70-72), even par.

Mikalsen dialed up his game for the final 18 holes, shooting an even-par 72 to rise up into a tie for 26th.

Petersilie delivered a 1-over 73 on his last day on the course, putting him in a tie for 38th.

Kelley got hot on Sunday putting up a 1-under 71, jumping the junior up to a tie for 46th.

Hagen wrapped up his day in a tie for 71st.

Johan Werge, competing as an individual, finished 80th.

Denver now begins preparation for the Summit League Championship in Newton, Kan. on April 30.
