Sept. 18, 2017

FORT COLLINS – The University of Denver men’s golf team opened its 2017-18 strong on Monday at the Ram Masters Invitational. The Pioneers finished the day in seventh with a team score of 14-over 574.

Par the 7,218-yard course was 70 at the Fort Collins Country Club.

Senior Chris Korte powered the way for DU with a solid performance on the course, placing in a tie for seventh after a 36-hole total of 138 (69-69), 2-under-par. The Littleton native’s strong day got off to a quick start thanks to ideal playing conditions on the course in the morning. Korte opened with four birdies in his first 18 holes.

Host Colorado State holds a commanding lead through day one on the 19-team field thanks to a tournament-record 12-under team effort in its first round, breaking the old mark by four strokes held by Denver since 2013.

Sophomore Isaac Petersilie used a hot second round to wrap up his day tied for 24th at 3-over. Petersilie’s four-birdie stretch over six holes midway through the afternoon highlighted the day.

Jake Kelley also closed his first day of the tournament in a tie for 24th at 3-over.

Eric Hagen tied for 91rd through his first 36 holes of play on the course.

Freshman John Sand, making his collegiate debut, sits at 16-over through two rounds.

Roy Kang and Michael Boylan, each competing as individuals, ended their days in 80th and 93rd.

Final-round action is set for tomorrow.
