ALBUQUERQUE – The University of Denver men’s golf team got some strong play early from its starting lineup on Friday, finishing 11th after day one of the Tucker Invitational. The Pioneers fired a 36-hole total of 601, 25-over par.

Par for the 7,555-yard course was 72 at the UNM Championship South Course.

UNLV is the leader in the clubhouse through two rounds of play in a very talented 17-team field. The Running Rebels sit at 1-under for the event, six strokes ahead of Washington.

“Today I actually saw a lot of really positive things out of our squad,” head coach Erik Billinger said. “Hagen had it under par both rounds on a really difficult golf course. Chris battled to a great 73 in the tough afternoon wind and Isaac opened with a 71.

“It hurt having to count a 77 in the morning and an 80 in the afternoon. The wind and the course setup were extremely challenging, but we still have one more round to go and we have the opportunity to get some key head-to-head wins against some good teams. Time to build on our positives and go out tomorrow with some determination.”

Senior Chris Korte used a strong second round to propel himself into a tie for 33rd with teammate Eric Hagen at 5-over. Korte’s second-round total of 73 jumped up the senior 21 spots on the leaderboard.

Isaac Petersilie wrapped up his first 36 holes of play in a tie for 50th.

Jake Kelley posted an 8-over on the scorecard on day one, putting him in a tie for 58th.

Roy Kang ended his first day of the tournament tied for 85th in the field.

Freshman John Sand, competing as an individual, wrapped up his day in a tie for 39th with scores of 76 and 74 in his two rounds of action.

The final 18 holes of the tournament will be played on Saturday.
