Pioneers Surge Late to Finish Third after Round 1

Oct. 26, 2017

TEAM LEADERBOARD | IND. LEADERBOARD

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of Denver men’s golf team opened the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational on Thursday with a terrific 6-under performance. The team score put the Pioneers in third place through day one of the three-day tournament.

DU’s score of 6-under (282) also was a new season low on the year, proving that it had no signs of rust from the long layoff since the Tucker Invitational back in September.

No. 22 Santa Clara is the leader in the clubhouse through one round at 9-under, a two-stroke advantage over No. 29 Brigham Young.

Head coach Erik Billinger went with the lineup of Chris Korte, Jake Kelley, Isaac Petersilie, Eric Hagen and Roy Kang.

“Great day for these guys,” Billinger said. “Jake finished his round like a champ with three straight birdies. Roy really stepped up and Hagen played solid. We are in solid position and I know these guys can go even lower the next couple of days.

“These guys are working really hard and that is all a coach can ask for and they know that good things are ahead.”

Jackson Solem, John Sand and Michael Boylan all competed, but as individuals.

Kelley was masterful out on the course, easily turning in his best round this season for Denver with a season-low 68 (4-under) on the day to put him in a tie for second. The Littleton native’s round consisted of seven birdies, including ending on a three-hole run of them.

Kang also came up big in his first round of the tournament, posting a career-best 3-under, putting him in a tie for eighth through 18 holes.

Hagen’s 2-under 70 was also tied a career low from the sophomore, resulting being tied for 17th.

Korte closed out day one in a tie for 77th and Petersilie in 95th.

On the individual side, Solem – making his collegiate debut – showed what he can bring to the table, putting up an even-par 72 on his scoresheet placing him in a tie for 34th with fellow teammate Sand.

Boylan shot a 78 on his first run through of the course.

Round two is set for Friday.
