Men’s Golf Selected Second in Summit League Preseason Poll
Chris Korte tabbed as golfer to watch
Jan. 19, 2018
ELMHURST, Ill. – The University of Denver men’s golf team was picked second in the preseason Summit League poll in a release by the league on Friday.
DU received four out of eight first-place votes, as coaches cannot vote for their own team.
South Dakota narrowly edged out the Pioneers for the No. 1 spot, 46-44 and received the other four first-place votes.
“Congrats to South Dakota on being named the preseason favorite, they played great this last fall season,” head coach Erik Billinger said. “We are excited about our own team and we know we are getting better each day. Our team is ready to compete this spring season. It’s time to let our games and scores do the talking.”
Denver had only three fall tournaments in 2017, with its home tournament being cancelled due to poor-weather conditions.
The Pioneers are looking for continued big play from senior Chris Korte, who was named a “Golfer to Watch” in the league release.
“Chris had a very solid fall season and he is extremely motivated to finish his collegiate career off strong this spring season,” Billinger said. “He has many strengths to his game, including his ball-striking and his self-belief. This spring season will be awesome to get to watch him compete.”
Korte’s 71.3 scoring average in the fall ranks second in the league, to go along with two 11th-place finishes in three tournaments participated in.
The former Regis standout delivered a season-low round of 69 back at the Ram Masters Invitational.
DU begins tournament play with rounds one and two of the Arizona Intercollegiate on January 29 in Tucson, Arizona.
