NEWTON, Kan. – The University of Denver men’s golf team wrapped up competition at the Summit League Championships at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course held in Newton, Kan., on Tuesday.
The Pioneers finished sixth in the tournament with an overall team total of 888 (305-296-287). The championship tournament consisted of three rounds of play.
Weather was a large issue over the course of the tournament, as teams battled excessive wind and rain, causing the practice round to be canceled and the first round to be postponed a day.
“The guys played really solid all year so it was really tough for us to not play well here in Kansas and to end the season like this”, said head coach Erik Billinger. “Yesterday the high winds and this golf course got the best of us.”
“Overall, this year was a big step forward in the right direction in many areas and the future is still bright.”
Senior captain Petter Mikalsen led the Crimson and Gold, finishing 3-over and tying for ninth place.
Junior Chris Korte finished the tournament in 12th place, firing a tournament low 69 in round two.
Junior Jake Kelley and freshman Eric Hagen tied for 27th, both finishing at 10-over par. Both men recorded their best round Tuesday, each shooting a 71, 1-under par.
Freshman Isaac Petersilie rounded out the championships for the Pioneers, finishing in 33rd at 11-over.
Tournament winner South Dakota State captured its second consecutive tournament title with a team total 877 strokes, 13-over.
