July 4, 2017
DENVER – University of Denver senior Chris Korte won the 117th Colorado Golf Association Match Play Championship back on June 23rd. The senior took home the title after defeating Kyle Pearson in the 36-hole final.
The Littleton native overcame some rainy weather at the start. But Korte prevailed en route to securing the Richard C. Campbell trophy, giving him a sweep of the top CGA Championships. He also won the CGA Amateur in 2015, making him just the fourth player since 1990 to claim both titles.
"This is a prestigious event here in Colorado and I am so proud of Chris as this was a tremendous performance,“ head coach Erik Billinger said. “It is a tough long week of competition and for Chris to come out on top is just awesome. Go Pios!"
Korte’s big day was just a strong performance from the Pioneers in the event. During the stroke-play portion, DU went 1-2-3 atop the leaderboard in Jake Kelley firing a course-record 63, Korte with a 65 and Isaac Petersilie with a 67. Korte then went on to win six straight matches to secure the championship.
The former Regis High standout worked his way through a field of initially 84 golfers, which was dropped to 64 after stroke play.
