Named Hornbeck Scholar winter quarter for 2017-18

2017-2018: Named to the NCHC Academic All-Conference Team and recognized as an NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete (Feb. 14, 2018)...

One of Denver’s 16 Academic All-Conference Team members… More than doubled his freshman (5G-4A-9P) scoring total, finishing sophomore campaign with 10G-10A-20P… Skated in all 44 of Denver’s games… Registered back-to-back two-goal games on Mar. 18 vs. WMU and Mar. 25 vs. MTU... Recorded career-high three points (2G-1A) on Jan. 28 vs. Omaha.

Scored first career NCAA goal on Nov. 21 at Wisconsin... Ended longest game in Magness Arena history on Mar. 12 vs. UNO, netting the GWG at the 8:54 mark of double overtime.

Before Denver:
Spent three-plus seasons with the North American Hockey League’s Wichita Falls Wildcats, recording 123 points (49G-74A) in 176 career games… In 2014-15, led his team and finished tied for 10th in the NAHL in scoring with 26G-34A-60P (60GP)… Also finished T-11th in the league with a +28 plus/minus rating…. Prior to joining the Wildcats, skated with the Pikes Peak Miners of the North American Prospects Hockey League for three seasons (2009-12), tallying 22GP-11G-8A-19P with the U-18 squad and 40GP-22G-28A-50P at the U-16 level… Won a league championship with the Miners in 2011 after leading the team in scoring with 16G-14A-30P (20GP).

The son of Diane Eshelman and Ken Staub… Has one brother (Kyle, 23) and one sister (Alissa, 18)… Chose to attend DU because he’s always wanted to play in his home state of Colorado… Career goal is to play pro hockey and use his college degree to be successful in his post-playing career… Favorite pro athlete is Peter Forsberg, whom he idolized growing up as a big Avalanche fan… Favorite movie: Wedding Crashers… Favorite TV show: Game of Thrones… Favorite video game: The Witcher… Favorite book: Flatbellies by Alan B. Hollingsworth… Favorite sport to play other than hockey: lacrosse… Hobbies include hiking, kayaking and going to the movies… Regularly volunteers at the Pikes Peak Therapeutic Riding Center.
