QUICK NOTES

• The Pioneers split last weekend against Merrimack and Air Force to conclude their non-conference schedule with a 6-2-2 record. This weekend will mark Denver’s first conference series since Dec. 1-2 at Minnesota Duluth

• Denver recorded three (3) shutouts during December, allowing an average of 1.75 goals per game (tied for 7th fewest in the NCAA)

• The Pioneers have held leads in 17 of 20 games this season. Oct. 20 vs. Lake Superior State, Dec. 9 vs. Colorado College and Dec. 29 vs. Merrimack mark the only games Denver did not hold an advantage

• Denver finished 2-2-0 last season against Miami, sweeping the RedHawks at Goggin Ice Arena

• Friday will mark Miami’s first game since splitting a series at Western Michigan on Dec. 8-9. The RedHawks played an exhibition against Windsor last weekend

DENVER SNAPSHOT

• Eight (8) of the Pioneers’ last 10 games have been decided by one (1) or fewer goals. Denver posted a 3-3-2 record in those games

• Despite averaging 3.55 goals per game (6th-most in the NCAA), the Pioneers averaged only 2.62 goals per game in December. On the flip side, Denver allows an average of 2.40 goals per game, but only allowed an average of 1.75 goals per game in December

• Denver is 11-1-4 when limiting opponents to four (4) or fewer goals

• Denver has outshot its opponent in each of the last five (5) games. The Pioneers average 36.1 shots per game, 3rd-most in the NCAA

• The Pioneers average 7.8 penalty minutes per game, fewest in the NCAA 

DENVER LAST WEEKEND

• Denver fell to Merrimack College, 3-2, on Friday and defeated Air Force, 6-0, on Saturday. Both games were played at Magness Arena

• On Friday, Merrimack scored two third-period goals to push past Denver. The Pioneers outshot the Warriors, 38-26

• On Saturday, Denver scored four (4) goals during a 2:32 span in the second period to defeat Air Force. The Pioneers finished 3/11 on the power play and outshot the Falcons, 46-18

DENVER: UP NEXT

• The Pioneers have a bye week before returning to Magness Arena for a two-game series against Nebraska Omaha on Jan. 19-20.

MIAMI SNAPSHOT

• The RedHawks played only four (4) games in December, posting a 2-2-0 record with series splits against Cornell and Western Michigan

• Miami has posted a 3-6-1 record against ranked opponents this season 

• The RedHawks have operated at 25.6% on the power play, 6th in the NCAA. Miami has gone 5/16 (31.2%) on the power play in their last five (5) games

• Gordie Green leads the RedHawks with 22 points (9-13-22) through 18 games

• Miami is the second-most penalized team in the NCAA, averaging 16.6 penalty minutes per game

MIAMI LAST WEEKEND

• The RedHawks beat Windsor in an exhibition, 8-2. The exhibition marked the first game for Miami in 21 days

• Miami travels to Omaha, Neb. for a two-game series against Nebraska Omaha on Jan. 12-13

• The Pioneers took the No. 5 spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll. Denver has been ranked in the Top 5 of the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll for 13 consecutive weeks

• Denver took the No. 4 spot in the USCHO.com poll, receiving one (1) of 50 first-place votes. Denver has been ranked in the Top 5 of the USCHO.com poll for 12 consecutive weeks

TERRY TO OLYMPICS

Troy Terry was named to the U.S. Olympic team set to compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea from Feb. 9 - Feb. 25

• Terry was among 23 players named to the roster and four (4) players who are currently playing in the NCAA

OLISCHEFSKI NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

Kohen Olischefski was named NCHC Rookie of the Week for games played between Dec. 11 and Dec. 31. The freshman forward recorded three (3) goals, one (1) assist and 14 shots in four (4) games

HEIKKINEN NAMED ROOKIE OF THE MONTH

Jaakko Heikkinen was named NCHC Rookie of the Month for December

• Heikkinen logged seven (7) points (3-4-7) through eight (8) games in December

SUPER POWER PLAY

• Denver’s power play ranks 3rd in the NCAA, converting at 26.3% (25-for-95)

• The Pioneers have scored a power play goal in each of their last four (4) games, converting at 29.1% (7-for-24)

TOUGH SCHEDULE

• Denver played five (5) ranked opponents through its first eight (8) matchups of the season: No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 6 Boston University, No. 1 St. Cloud State, No. 3 North Dakota and No. 15 Minnesota Duluth

• The Pioneers are 7-1-1 against ranked opponents this season

• According to the KRACH ratings, the Pioneers have the highest strength of schedule in the NCAA

Tariq Hammond played his 100th career game on Dec. 9 against Colorado College

Tanner Jaillet made his 100th career start on Dec. 2 against Minnesota Duluth
