Denver Defeated Colorado College by Identical Scores of 3-1 in a Home-and-Home Series on December 2/3 to Retain the Gold Pan Trophy

The No. 2 DU Pioneers (18-6-4, 10-3-3-2 NCHC) and unranked CC Tigers (7-17-2, 3-11-2-0 NCHC) will square off in a home-and-home series this weekend, beginning on Friday night (7:30pm) at Magness Arena and concluding on Saturday (6pm) at Broadmoor World Arena. Friday’s game will be televised by Altitude 2 and carried by TSN 2 in Canada. Both games will be broadcast by 104.3 FM The Fan and streamed via NCHC.TV.

Denver and Colorado College were both off last weekend. The Pioneers currently rank second in the NCHC Standings with 35 points while the Tigers are in eighth place with 11.

On the special teams front, DU has moved up to 16th place in the NCAA in PP% with a mark of 20.1 after going 12-for-41 (29.3%, 7th – NCAA/1st - NCHC) with the man advantage during the month of January. Denver’s PK% currently stands at 81.8 which ranks 35th nationally. The Tigers presently rank T-39th in the NCAA in PK% (80.8) and T-57th in PP% (10.2).



Entering this weekend’s series, the Pioneers have earned 10 straight wins versus the Tigers which is the third-longest streak in program history:


22 games (Feb. 20, 1959-Feb. 8, 1963)

Since first clashing on January 6, 1950, DU and CC have squared off a total of 304 times with the Pioneers having amassed an all-time record of 171-116-17 against the Tigers. Denver has won the last three Gold Pan Trophies, including this season’s, to bring its all-time total to 12 – tying Colorado College in the all-time series.

The Pioneers are co-led in scoring in 2016-17 by Florida Panthers prospect Henrik Borgström (14G-11A) and San Jose Sharks prospect Dylan Gambrell (7G-18A), both of whom have tallied 25 points on the season. Borgström currently ranks T-5th in the NCAA in scoring by a freshman while his 0.64 goals-per-game average is tops in the nation among first-year players. Between the pipes, reigning NCHC Player of the Month Tanner Jaillet has logged 86% (1460/1705) of Denver’s goaltending minutes. He currently ranks seventh in the NCAA in GAA (1.89), 10th in SV% (.931) and T-5th in W% (.750, 16-4-4).

Colorado College’s leading scorer this season is sophomore forward Mason Bergh (26GP-12G-5A-17P) while freshman goalie Alex Leclerc has logged 78.6% (1236/1573) of his team’s minutes in net, amassing a 5-14-2 record in addition to a 3.16 GAA and .900 SV%.

DU SLAP SHOTS: Denver won 30 games during the 2016 calendar year which was the highest total in the nation… Will Butcher currently ranks T-8th in the nation in scoring by a defenseman with 5G-19A-24P (28GP)… Matt Marcinew currently ranks sixth in the nation with 384 faceoff wins and fifth with a FO% of 61.7… The Pioneers currently rank T-2nd in the nation in Team GAA (2.00)… Matt Marcinew (3G-6A), Jarid Lukosevicius (3G-6A) and Henrik Borgström (6G-3A) all tallied nine points in January, the second-highest scoring total in the NCHC for the month.

MISC. PRE-NCAA CONNECTIONS: Logan O’Connor (DU) and Trey Bradley (CC) won a Clark Cup together as members of the Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) last season... Matt Van Voorhis (DU) and Sam Rothstein (CC) played together on the Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) from 2011-13... Evan Ritt (DU), James Martello (CC) and Ben Israel (CC) all played on the Jersey Hitmen (USPHL-Pr) in 2013-14... Tariq Hammond (DU) and Tanner Ockey (CC) were teammates on the Okotoks Oilers (AJHL) from 2011-13... Blake Hillman (DU), Dylan Gambrell (DU) and Jacob Nehama (CC) were teammates on Dubuque (USHL) in 2014-15.
