PIONEERS & REDHAWKS SET TO CLASH AT GOGGIN ICE CENTER

Junior Netminder Tanner Jaillet has Allowed One Goal or Fewer in 14 of his 27 Starts this Season

The No. 2 DU Pioneers (20-6-4, 12-3-3-2 NCHC) will travel to Oxford, Ohio this weekend the face the MU RedHawks (9-13-6, 5-9-4-2 NCHC) in a two-game series at Goggin Ice Center. Denver is currently in First Place in the NCHC Standings with 41 points on the season while Miami ranks seventh with 21. Friday’s game (puck drop – 5:30pm MT) will air on ESPN Denver 1600 AM while Saturday’s contest (puck drop – 6pm MT) will be broadcast by 104.3 FM The Fan as well as the American Sports Network. Both games will stream live on NCHC.TV ($).

Denver and Miami skated to a pair of draws at Magness Arena earlier this season, with DU earning extra conference standings points on each night by virtue of capturing a pair of shootout wins. The Pios are now 10-10-2 all-time vs. the RedHawks; all six of the teams’ series since the formation of the NCHC in 2013 have resulted in splits.

The Pioneers and RedHawks have met twice in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff; DU downed MU 4-3 in the Conference’s Inaugural Title Game while Miami earned a 6-3 win at Denver’s expense in the 2015 Conference Semifinals. The RedHawks went on to capture the 2015 Conference Championship with a 3-2 win over St. Cloud State.

Miami and Denver are also 1-1 against one another at the NCAA Tournament, with the Pioneers having downed the RedHawks by a score of 3-2 on March 26, 2004 in Round 1 of the West Regional en route to earning their sixth National Championship. Five years later, MU beat DU 4-2 in Round 1 of the West Regional, this time in Minneapolis, Minn.    


 

 


The Pioneers are led in scoring in 2016-17 by Florida Panthers prospect Henrik Borgström (24GP-15G-12A-27P), who currently rank among the nation’s leaders in goals (3rd) and points (T-7th) by a freshman. Between the pipes,
reigning NCHC Player of the Month and NCHC Goaltender of the Week Tanner Jaillet currently ranks third in the NCAA in GAA (1.82), T-7th in SV% (.932) and T-2nd in wins (18). He has allowed one goal or fewer in more than half (14/27) of his starts this season.

Chicago Blackhawks prospect Anthony Louis currently leads Miami in scoring with 13G-19A-32P (28GP) on the season. Freshman goalie Ryan Larkin has logged 91% (1564/1715) of the minutes in net for Miami this season, amassing a 2.53 GAA and .916 SV% in addition to a record of 8-11-6.

On the special teams front, DU has moved up to 13th place in the NCAA in PP% with a mark of 20.6 after going 14-for-48 (29.2%, 7th – NCAA/1st - NCHC) since Jan. 1 with the man advantage. Denver’s PK% currently stands at 82.4 which ranks 24th nationally. The RedHawks, meanwhile, presently rank T-33rd in the NCAA in PP% (18.2) and T-14th in PK% (85.1).

DU SLAP SHOTS: Since Jan. 1 the Pioneers rank second in the NCAA in both GF/GP (4.00) and GA/GP (1.60), leading the nation in GM/GP (2.40)… On the season, Denver ranks second nationally in GA/GP (1.93)… The Pioneers won 30 games during the 2016 calendar year which was the highest total in all of college hockey… Denver Captain Will Butcher currently ranks T-6th in the nation in scoring by a defenseman with 5G-21A-26P (30GP)… Senior center Matt Marcinew ranks third in the nation in FO% (62.0) and sixth in FOW (410)… Sophomore winger Jarid Lukosevicius leads all NCAA skaters in GWG (6).

MISC. PRE-NCAA CONNECTIONS: Logan O'Connor (DU) and Chaz Switzer (MU) won a Clark Cup together in 2015 as members of the Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL)... Dylan Gambrell (DU), Michael Davies (DU), Blake Hillman (DU), Willie Knierim (MU) and Gordie Green (MU) were all teammates on the Dubuque Fighting Saints (USHL) in 2014-15… David Carle (DU) coached Ryan Siroky (MU) on the Green Bay Gamblers (USHL) in 2013… Colin Staub (DU), Rudy Junda (DU) and Chase Munroe (MU) played together on the Wichita Falls Wildcats (NAHL) in 2013-14… Munroe also played with Patrick Munson (DU) on the Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL) in 2014-15… Kevin Conley (DU), Kiefer Sherwood (MU) and Josh Melnick (MU) were teammates on the Youngstown Phantoms (USHL) in 2014-15… Will Butcher (DU), Louie Belpedio (MU), Anthony Louis (MU) and Ryan Larkin’s (MU) cousin Dylan (NHL/DRW) were all teammates on the 2012-13 U.S. National Development Team.
