May 19, 2017
The University of Denver held its annual Pioneer Awards Ceremony the evening of Thursday, May 18 at the Cable Center, with DU student-athletes receiving prestigious awards during the event. Men’s Hockey senior Will Butcher took home the Pioneer Award, Men’s Tennis senior Diogo Rocha captured the Managerial Leadership Award and Men’s Soccer senior Sam Hamilton won the Cortese Trophy.
The Pioneer Award is open to DU students completing their senior year as well as faculty or staff members who have been at the University for five years or more. This is one of the University of Denver's most prestigious awards and is given annually to the individual who best exemplifies the Pioneer spirit in their efforts on campus and in the local community. It is the highest honor given to undergraduate students. Recipients of the Pioneer Award demonstrate strong academic performance, leadership, community service, campus involvement, strong character and pride in the University.
The Cortese Trophy was initiated by Charles Cortese – the University’s Chief Academic Officer under Chancellor Dwight Smith – and is awarded to the undergraduate student-athlete who best combines academic excellence with outstanding athletic achievement and outstanding leadership. The Managerial Leadership Award, meanwhile, goes to undergraduate Management majors who have demonstrated excellent leadership potential in the business world.
