DENVER –
The [4/4] University of Denver men’s lacrosse team defeated Delaware 19-12 in an exhibition in-front of a paid attendance of 1,951 at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium on Saturday.

“First of all, I want to thank Delaware for coming out here to play,” head coach Bill Tierney said. “A lot of teams won’t do that, and we really appreciate them flying out here for this scrimmage. The two things we’ll take away from this is first of all, thankfully we will now have film of us against an opponent, and secondly, we have a lot of work to do, and a week to do it in.

“There were some things we did well. Obviously Trevor [Baptiste] was really good again. I thought offensively we went on some real runs, which we’ve been known to do, but other times we were kind of flat. Defensively we need to be more aware of what’s going on around us. Sometimes when Trevor wins every faceoff, you get a little complacent at the other end, and I thought you saw that today.”

Denver took a 14-6 lead into the intermission with its first group in the game. In the opening 30 minutes, 10 different Pioneers scored, including a goal from each of its midfield lines. Overall, 14 different Pioneers found the back of the net, and 10 different players picked up assists in the exhibition contest.

Senior Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) went 17-of-21 from the X in the first half, picking up 10 ground balls.

Junior Colton Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) led the Pioneers with four goals, all in the first half. Junior attackmen Austin French (Danville, Calif.) and Colin Rutan (Walnut Creek, Colo.) each tallied three points, netting a goal and two goals, respectively. Sophomore Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) scored twice as well.

Baptiste, redshirt-senior Connor Flynn (Charlotte, N.C.), sophomore Kyle Smith (New Canaan, Conn.) and freshman Ted Sullivan (Tucson, Ariz.) all finished with a goal and an assist.

The Pioneers shot 14-of-30 in the first half, and finished perfect in two extra-man opportunities.
