VILLANOVA, Pa. – Junior Colin Rutan (Walnut Creek, Calif.) netted his first career hat trick, but BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Year Nick Marrocco made 14 saves for [17/18] Georgetown to spark an 8-3 upset of the [3/3] University of Denver men’s lacrosse team on Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium.

Senior faceoff specialist Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) finished 11-of-15 on the day with five ground balls. The goal total for Denver was its lowest since the Pioneers lost 12-3 at No. 2 Virginia on April 28, 2003.

After a 6-5 game in Washington D.C. a little over a month ago, Georgetown’s defense held the Pioneers again, shutting the Pioneers out in the opening 15 minutes. Jake Carraway got the Hoyas on the board twice in the first, with goals with 7:33 remaining and 19 seconds remaining in the first frame.

Hoyas’ goalkeeper Nick Marrocco finished with nine saves in the first half, holding the Pioneers to just one goal in the opening 30 minutes. Lucas Wittenberg got his 19th of the season and Carraway completed his first-half hat trick to push the Hoyas’ lead to 4-0 with 9:54 to go in the half. Rutan scored his seventh of the season with 2:08 to break the Pioneers’ scoring drought, but Wittenberg netted his second with 16 seconds to go in the half to send the two-seed into the locker room with a four-goal advantage.

Craig Berge got his 21st of the season to open the second half scoring and make it 6-1 Georgetown with 11:20 to go in the third. Rutan finished off his second of the day on a behind-the-back goal to pull the Pioneers back to within four, but it was the only goal the Pioneers could get in the third to send Denver into the fourth quarter trailing by four.

Matt Behrens got a goal on the back-side pipe to start the fourth-quarter scoring with 11:26 to go in the game off a feed from Wittenberg. Georgetown finished off its second hat trick of the game when Wittenberg netted his third with 8:48 to go in the fourth. Rutan gave Denver a quick answer, scoring 13 seconds later to complete his first career hat trick with his ninth of the campaign, but the Hoyas defeated the Pioneers for the first time to win the BIG EAST Championship
