SPARKS, Md. – The University of Denver men’s lacrosse program, Presented by your Hometown Toyota Stores, sits third in the 2018 Nike/US Lacrosse Preseason Poll that was released on Monday morning.

Duke was atop the preseason poll, a team the Pioneers will visit in their second game of the 2018 campaign on February 16. Denver will also travel to No. 6 Notre Dame (March 10), No. 10 North Carolina (March 5) and No. 20 Villanova (April 7). The Pioneers will host two of their fellow 2017 Championship Weekend participants at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, welcoming No. 8 Ohio State (March 17) and No. 19 Towson (March 24).

In addition, three of Denver’s 2018 opponents were listed in the “also considered” category of the poll. Denver will visit Air Force (February 10) and Providence (April 21) before wrapping up their season against Marquette (April 28) from that group.

Previewing the 2018 Pioneers



Three-time USILA First Team All-American and 2018 Team USA selection for the FIL World Lacrosse Championships this summer, Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) returns in 2018 in hopes of bookending his career with National Championships. The Denver captain was DU’s third Tewaaraton Award finalist in as many years in 2017, finishing first in faceoff win percentage (.744-fourth best in NCAA history), second in faceoff wins (297-seventh-most in NCAA history) and second in ground balls per game (10.47 – 10th most in NCAA history). Baptiste enters his final collegiate campaign third in NCAA history in career faceoff wins (879) and fifth in career ground balls (481).

The 2018 Pioneers will also be captained by offensive midfielder Connor Donahue (Groton, Mass.) and long stick midfielder Sean Mayle (San Carlos, Calif.). Donahue was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection a year ago, putting up 26 points on 11 goals and 15 assists. Mayle is a two-time BIG EAST First Team pick, making 44 career appearances in Denver’s defense. 

Denver’s offense returns four of its top five point-getters from a year ago for an offense that finished fifth in the country in scoring average at 13.47. Denver also finished 10th nationally in man-up offense at 45.6 percent and second in scoring margin at +4.71. Sophomore Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) led the 2017 Pioneers in points (72) and assists (32) a year ago.

The Pioneers’ defense finished 13th nationally at 8.76 goals-per-game a year ago. Juniors Dylan Johnson (Englewood, Colo.) and Dylan Gaines (Baltimore, Md.) and senior Matt Jones (Denver, Colo.) all started at least seven games at close defense for Denver a year ago, while SSDMs Nick Phillips (Denver, Colo.), Danny Logan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) and Zach Runberg (Centennial, Colo.) join Mayle and Colin Squires (West Linn, Ore.) as returners in Denver’s defensive midfield.

Head coach Bill Tierney returns for his ninth season in charge of the Denver program, reaching the NCAA Tournament in each of his previous eight seasons, including trips to Championship Weekend in five of the last seven years. Tierney enters his 34th season as a college head coach with a record of 381-125, including 109-31 at Denver.
