Three Pioneers Taken in 2017 NLL Draft
First Round pick Tyler Pace headed to Calgary, Connor Cannizzaro stays put in Colorado and Christian Burgdorf selected by Toronto

OAKVILLE, Ontario – The University of Denver men’s lacrosse program had three recent graduates selected in the 2017 NLL Draft on Monday night at the Toronto Rock Athletic Center in Oakville, Ont. The league will begin its 32nd season on December 8th.
Tyler Pace was selected with the ninth overall pick by the Calgary Roughnecks, Connor Cannizzaro was picked in the middle of the third round (28th overall) by the Colorado Mammoth and Christian Burgdorf was taken 49th overall by the Toronto Rock.
A Coquitlam, B.C., native, Pace was a USILA Second Team All-American in 2016, and a two-time selection to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List. Pace finished his collegiate career with 67 appearances, 155 points (6th in DU’s DI history), 87 goals (10th) and 68 assists (6th). The DU alum captained the 2016 Coquitlam Adanacs to the Minto Cup Championship.
Cannizzaro was a Tewaaraton Award Finalist in 2016, and a nominee for the award in each of his three seasons with the Pioneers. The Cazenovia, N.Y., native led Denver to the 2015 National Championship in his first year with the program, breaking the Denver single-season points record with 90, and scored the second most goals in Denver’s DI history with 57. Cannizzaro finished with 259 career points on 171 goals and 88 assists.
A four-time USILA All-American close defender, Burgdorf heads to Toronto after finishing second in Denver’s DI history in games played with 70, picking up 121 ground balls and causing 41 turnovers (third in DU history). Burgdorf was a First Team All-America selection in 2016, a Second Team All-America pick in 2015 and 2017, and an honorable mention selection in his freshman year of 2014.
The 2018 Pioneers will begin their 2017 fall preseason schedule on Saturday when Denver welcomes the University of Tokyo to Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium. Saturday’s exhibition begins at 1 p.m. MT and is open to the public with free admission. Later this fall, Denver will take on Limestone in Washington D.C. (Oct. 15/10 a.m. MT) and host an Alumni Game on Homecoming Weekend (Oct. 21/12 p.m. MT).
