Franks on Smalley:
Shae is a leader who is willing to do anything for his team.  His blue-collar approach to the game sees him break up many plays and win tons of challenges.  He is a defender who can provide support in the attack with his seasoned left foot, but prides himself on his defending.  In our system, Shae will be asked to push forward and have the engine to get up and down the flank.

Fields on Smalley:
Shae Smalley has been with the Columbus Crew SC Academy since U14, he is a very gifted player, with a lethal left foot and has an astute tactical insight of the game. Shae is predominantly a left back and/or left center back, but has also played the defensive midfield role. Shae is a very intelligent and mature young man, that always strives to provide his very best in everything that he does. Shae has an extremely bright future and I am positive that he will realize all of his potential.
