SPOKANE, Wash. – The [-/RV] University of Denver men’s soccer team fell to Gonzaga 2-1 in extra time on Saturday night at Luger Field.

“It was not a great game from us tonight,” head coach Jamie Franks said. “None of our guys performed to their ability. We missed three or four golden opportunities, had a weak penalty called against us and we just didn’t bring our Fighting Football mentality to the field tonight. If we don’t have guys out there to overcome the times of adversity, then results like this are going to happen.

"The point of our out of conference schedule is to prepare us for league play, and I think we've done that in our first 10 matches. We are the four-time regular season and league tournament champions, and we look forward to stepping out on the field Saturday to begin to defend those titles."

Junior Kenny Akamatsu (Niigata, Japan) netted the breakthrough in the 42nd minute, heading in a rebound off a Ryan Barlow (Coppell, Texas) shot into the empty net to give the Pioneers (5-5-0) the lead at the intermission. Gonzaga (6-3-1) got the equalizer off a penalty and won the match in the 91st minute off a Christo Michaelson goal from just outside the six-yard box.

Redshirt-senior Eric Kronenberg (Boulder, Colo.) played a cross to Barlow at the back post to start the Pioneers’ first-half scoring opportunity. Barlow’s header off the pass rattled the crossbar and bounced once to the head level of Akamatsu who knocked in his first of the 2017 campaign and the third goal of his career. With the assist, Barlow earned his fifth point of the week, after scoring twice in Denver’s 3-1 win at Saint Louis on Tuesday. Kronenberg’s assist was the second of his career.

Each team took five shots in the opening 45 minutes, and the Pioneers took five of the seven corner kicks in the first half.

Gonzaga got the equalizer in the 52nd minute thru a Ben White penalty after freshman outside back Jacob Stensson (Stockholm, Sweden) was caught with his hands on the back of a Gonzaga attacker while the two were going up for a header in the area.

Junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) nearly put Denver back in-front a minute later, but after touching the ball by the Gonzaga keeper, Shinyashiki had his shot cleared off the line by Austin Giftopoulos.

The home side went down to 10-men in the 83d minute when Jalen Crisler was shown his second caution in a 15 minute span, pulling Kronenberg down from behind inside the Pioneers’ attacking half.

Gonzaga scored the winner 58 seconds into extra time when Joe Corner played a cross just outside the six-yard box that Michaelson got on the end of to give the home side three points.
