TULSA, Okla. – Junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) equalized at 1-1 in the 56th minute, but the Pioneers fell to Tulsa 2-1 on Tuesday night at Hurricane Stadium.

“Once again, we’re on the wrong side of a result on the road, but tonight is the first night this season where I really saw my team,” head coach Jamie Franks said. “Our brand is Proactive Fighting Football, and we showed that tonight. We’ve had trouble this season finding that level of intensity, and playing inspired soccer, but we really saw our guys fight out there today. Obviously we never want to lose a match, but we came out to Tulsa to get better, and as a staff, we’re happy with the guys’ performance tonight. The results will come. Now we look to get back into Summit League play and build on this performance Saturday at Fort Wayne.”

Tulsa took the lead on a corner kick just shy of the half hour mark when Joe Ruiz headed a service from Miguel Velasquez into the back of the net from eight yards out. The goal was Ruiz’s first of the 2017 campaign.

Shinyashiki’s leveler came in the 56th minute off an assist from redshirt-senior Eric Kronenberg (Boulder, Colo.). After the two linked up in reverse order in Denver’s 1-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday night, Kronenberg played a cross into Shinyashiki this time, and the Denver junior finished his fourth goal of the season into the lower left corner from just inside the six-yard box.

The Sao Paulo native’s goal is the 18th of his career, moving Shinyashiki into sole possession of fourth in Denver’s DI Record Book in goals, and sixth in Denver’s DI Record Book in points with 46. The assist for Kronenberg was the third of his career.

Tulsa grabbed the lead back in the 71st minute off Velasquez’s second goal of the campaign. After setting up the Hurricanes opener from the corner flag in the first half, Velasquez netted a free kick from 22 yards out to give the home side a 2-1 advantage.

UP NEXT: Denver will continue its four-match road swing this weekend when the Pioneers resume Summit League Saturday at Fort Wayne (5 p.m. MT), followed by a trip to Oral Roberts (Oct. 21/6 p.m. MT). The Pioneers will close out the road swing with another mid-week clash, this time on October 25 at New Mexico (7 p.m. MT).
