INDIANAPOLIS (DU/NCAA) – Former University of Denver men’s soccer captains Sam Hamilton (Evergreen, Colo.) and Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) have been selected as two of 58 fall sport recipients of this year’s NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships, the NCAA announced on Friday. Hamilton and Underwood are the 16th and 17th NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients at the University of Denver in the last decade.

The pair of Pioneers will each receive a $7,500 scholarship to be applied toward the graduate degree program of their choice.

Awardees are chosen by the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee, which includes faculty athletics representatives, athletics administrators and a conference commissioner.

The NCAA awards Postgraduate Scholarships to student-athletes who are in their final year of college athletics eligibility. Up to 175 scholarships are awarded each year for use toward an accredited graduate program. Awardees are evaluated on their academic and athletic achievement, campus involvement, community service, volunteer activities and demonstrated leadership. The program rewards college athletes whose dedication and effort reflect the characteristics needed to succeed in graduate study.

Hamilton was a two-time captain in a Denver uniform, leading Denver to its first College Cup in program history in 2016. A former holding mid, Hamilton was a CoSIDA Academic All-America pick in 2016 and was a Senior CLASS Award Candidate. Hamilton made 83 appearances, a Denver Division I record, starting 57 of those appearances. The Evergreen, Colo., native was part of the third-best Senior CLASS in the country in 2016, finishing with a 59-13-11 record. In 2016, Hamilton started in-front of a Denver defense that finished third in the country in goals against average and third in shutout percentage, while not allowing a shot against Saint Louis and not allowing a shot on goal in five matches. Following his senior season, Hamilton was drafted in the first round of the MLS SuperDraft by the Colorado Rapids.

A former Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) President, Underwood finished his career as the second-most capped Division I player, seeing action in 80 matches and making 64 career starts, including all 43 matches in his final two years with the program. Underwood finished eighth in Denver’s Division I history in assists with 14 to go along with 11 career goals for 36 points. A co-captain with Graham Smith in 2017, Underwood earned United Soccer Coaches’ Scholar All-West Region honors in his senior year and was named to the Summit League Second Team and All-Tournament Team.

“These scholarships are one of the ways the NCAA provides a pathway to opportunity for student-athletes,” said Mattie White, chair of the NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Committee and senior associate athletics director at Indiana. “These scholarships are reserved for student-athletes with distinguished college careers highlighted by outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. These experiences prepare them for success in graduate study and life.”
