DENVER – Former Georgia Southern captain and Colorado Rapids reserve Clayton Zelin has been named the Director of Men’s Soccer Operations, third-year head coach Jamie Franks announced on Thursday.

Zelin comes to the Pioneers after director and coaching stints at Real Colorado, Sereno Soccer Club and with the 2017 National Champion Scottsdale Blackhawks.

“We’re excited to have Clayton on staff,” Franks said. “Above anything else, he shows the same passion that we do for helping young kids become men and helping them find their authentic leadership style. We think his passion is going to be great for our student-athletes, and his ability to support in all aspects of our program will be very beneficial. It’s great to have another member of our staff that shares the same values as us.”

The former collegiate captain won league, state, regional and national championships with his former three clubs, and currently holds his NSCAA Premier and UEFA B coaching licenses. Zelin has a proven record of development with his previous clubs, including players that have gone on to receive invites to the United States national training center and regional teams. His former players have also received collegiate scholarships and opportunities to play at the professional level.

“I’m very excited to join the Denver men’s soccer staff,” Zelin said. “It has been one of the best programs in the country, and to be able to learn from this coaching staff and give my insight to them as well will make for a great upcoming fall season. This staff and my previous coaching experience align with similar values, primarily investing into the player as a person.”

Following his career at Georgia Southern, Zelin played professionally in the MLS Reserves, PDL, MASL and the USL.

Former Pioneer goalkeeper Dan Jackson has moved into his new role of video specialist, while Mac Hemmi will serve under Franks for the second-consecutive season, spending 2017 as the volunteer assistant. Assistant coaches from Franks’ 2016 National Coaching Staff of the Year will see Ryan Hopkins begin his fifth year on the Denver staff in 2017 and Levi Rossi begin his fourth overall and third as a full time assistant for Pioneers.
