KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Denver/United Soccer Coaches) – The University of Denver men’s soccer team combined for a 3.619 grade point average in 2016-17, turning in the top GPA among the 205 NCAA Division I men’s soccer programs in the country for the second-consecutive year, the United Soccer Coaches’ Association announced. Last October, Denver’s men shared the top grade point average in the country honor with Notre Dame at 3.49.

“This honor is a testament to all of our student-athletes’ hard work, and their commitment to excellence in the classroom,” head coach Jamie Franks said. “We take great pride in having the top grade point average in the country, because our staff’s goal for this program isn’t just to develop great soccer players, but to develop our student-athletes for life after college. We challenge our players socially, academically and on the field to work towards that goal, and winning the Gold Vest at DU (community service based award) three of the last four years, having the top grade point average in NCAA DI men’s soccer for the second-straight year and having the success that we’ve had the past couple of years with this group on the field is a testament to all three of those areas.

“I want to thank academic services and the professors that put in a lot of work to help give our student-athletes the best chance to succeed. Without their support, help and expertise, that wouldn’t be possible. When student-athletes come to the University of Denver men’s soccer program, they understand that they will be challenged, and we recruit the players into this program that want to embrace that challenge.”

Denver’s women’s program combined for a 3.57, tying for 62nd of 333 women’s teams in the nation. The Pioneers’ men’s and women’s programs each won the team academic award for the ninth-straight season.

A total of 838 collegiate teams (293 men, 545 women) earned the Team Academic Award, including 195 schools who had both their men's and women's programs among the recipients.

United Soccer Coaches annually celebrates the academic achievements of high school and college soccer teams whose student-athletes collectively demonstrate a commitment to excellence in their studies over the course of a full school year.

College Team Academic Award recipients are active members of the United Soccer Coaches College Services Program with a composite grade point of average of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale for all players on the roster.
