GREENWOOD, Ind. – University of Denver men’s soccer senior co-captains Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) and junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) were all named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District VII Team, the organization announced.

“Our program has established a commitment to excellence in the classroom as a priority of this program, in addition to our work in the community and on the field,” head coach Jamie Franks said. “We take great pride in our academic accomplishments, because as a staff we strive to develop not just great soccer players, but young men for life after college. We’re proud of these three young men as they continue to lead our program in the right direction.”

The Denver trio helped lead the Pioneers to the top grade point average in the country for the second season in a row in 2016-17. All three players also earned awards at Wednesday’s Summit League banquet.

The Academic All-District® teams include the student-athletes listed and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. This is the seventh year of the expanded Academic All-America® program as CoSIDA moved from recognizing a University Division (Division I) and a College Division (all non-Division I) and has doubled the number of scholar-athletes honored.

The expanded teams include NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division III participants, while the College Division Academic All-America® Team combines NAIA, Canadian and two-year schools. The Division II and III Academic All-America® program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2017-18 DII and DIII Academic All-America® teams program.

First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the CoSIDA Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first, second- and third team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
