KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The University of Denver men’s soccer team had three players voted to the United Soccer Coaches’ All-West Region Team, the organization announced. Junior striker Andre Shinyashiki (Sao Paulo, Brazil) was named to the first team, co-captain Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) earned second team honors and co-captain Alex Underwood (Winnetka, Ill.) was voted to the third team.

Shinyashiki finished his junior season with nine goals and four assists in 19 matches for the Pioneers. The 2017 Summit League Offensive Player of the Year led the team in goals, and netted a Summit-League best five goals in league play. Shinyashiki’s 22 points sits eighth in Denver’s Division I single-season record book. The two-time Summit League First Team selection scored two game-winning goals and two game-tying goals, including the equalizer with 16 seconds left in regulation in the regular season win over Omaha.

Following his transfer from Oregon State after his sophomore season, Smith played and started in 43 matches in his Denver career, finishing with 19 points on six goals and seven assists. Smith scored three game-winning goals in his career, including against Omaha and No. 16 Akron in his senior year. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native split time at holding mid and center back in his senior campaign, but still finished second on the team in points with 10 on three goals and four assists.

A three-year regular in Denver’s starting XI, Underwood finished his Pioneer career as Denver’s second-most capped player, seeing action in 80 matches and making 64 starts, including starting all 43 matches in his final two seasons with the Crimson and Gold. Underwood finished eighth in Denver’s Division I history in assists with 14 to go along with 11 goals for the Pioneers for a total of 36 points. In 2017, Underwood played and started in all 19 matches as a winger, finishing with eight points on three goals and two assists.
