NEW YORK (DU/MLS) – University of Denver men’s soccer co-captain Graham Smith (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) was one of 60 college players selected to participate in the 2018 Major League Soccer Combine Jan. 11-17 at Orlando City Stadium, MLS announced on Thursday. The MLS SuperDraft is set for Jan. 19 in Philadelphia.
Smith was recently named to the United Soccer Coaches All-West Region Second Team. Following his transfer from Oregon State after his sophomore season, Smith played and started in 43 matches in his Denver career, finishing with 19 points on six goals and seven assists. Smith scored three game-winning goals in his career, including against Omaha and No. 16 Akron in his senior year. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native split time at holding mid and center back in his senior campaign, but still finished second on the team in points with 10 on three goals and four assists.
A committee of MLS coaches and NCAA D1 coaches from every conference selected the invitees, all of whom completed their college eligibility this season. Further invitees, including Generation adidas signings and non-college players, will be announced in coming weeks. The Combine will be coached by a mix of college soccer head coaches and MLS academy personnel.
Earlier this month, Smith was named both a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team selection and United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America Second Team for his performances both in the classroom and on the field.
Academically, Smith has earned a 3.94 grade point average in finance at the University of Denver. Smith helped lead the Pioneers to the top grade point average in the country for the second-straight year in 2016-17. In a class group project, Smith did a full analysis of Coca-Cola's stock and predicted its future performance in a class called Analysis of Securities.
