Denver Tops Lamar, 6-1

The University of Denver men’s tennis team earned a 6-1 match victory against Lamar University on Friday at the Thompson Family Tennis Center.

"We played well overall and seeing the freshman get off to a great start to their college career was nice to see," Denver men's tennis coach Ricardo Rubio said. "We also had some guys step up and play good tennis, so that also a great sign. UTSA will be a great test on Sunday."

The Pioneers picked up five (5) singles victories in addition to the doubles point in their first dual match of the 2017-2018 campaign. Playing in the No. 1 spot in his first collegiate match, Mattia Ros defeated Sebastian Santibanez (3-6, 6-4, 10-3), and his teammates followed suit with wins from Jorge Nunez, Sean Huynh, Pedro Fernandez Del Valle and Wyatt Lovera. Nunez and Fernandez Del Valle each won in two (2) sets.

In doubles competition, the combinations of Jesse Ruder-Hook and Matt Summers, as well as Wyatt Lovera and Pedro Fernandez Del Valle, had success with 6-3 and 7-5 victories respectively.

Denver returns to action against the University of Texas at San Antonio (USTA) on Sunday, Jan. 21.
