Denver Finishes Opening Day of Lobo Invitational

Albuquerque, N.M. – Despite a slow start in doubles play, the University of Denver men’s tennis team had a strong singles performance on the day, falling in only one match.

The doubles pairing of Wyatt Lovera and Sean Huynh took out the New Mexico State team of Stijn de Haan and Mauri Bentez 6-4. Also earning a 6-4 victory was the duo of Ignatius Castelino and Aaron Diemer over Aggies Enrique Asmar and Sergi Espias.

In singles play, the Crimson and Gold showed their strength, earning wins in 11 of the 12 matchups.

Senior Jesse Ruder-Hook took home dubs in both his matches, taking out Felix Schumann (Northern Arizona) 6-4, 6-4 and Niko Moceanu (Abilene Christian) 6-0, 7-6. Sophomore Pedro Fernandez Del Valle also swept the day, winning 6-4, 6-3 over NAU’s Chris Steele and Joaquin Delgado (ACU) 6-1, 6-1.

DU’s Huynh, Castelino and Diemer all also went undefeated in singles play. Huynh only gave up seven games in both matchups, while Diemer and Castelino gave up nine and 10 respectively.

Lovera split the day in singles play but picked up a victory 6-2, 6-0 against NAU’s Tom Fisher.

The Pioneers continue the Lobo Invitational through Sunday.
