Denver Ranks No. 2 in Summit League Preseason Poll

The University of Denver men’s tennis team was ranked No. 2 in the 2018 Summit League Men’s Tennis Preseason Poll and freshman Mattia Ros was named to the Summit League Players to Watch list, the  Summit League announced on Thursday.

Denver received 32 points and two (2) of seven (7) available first-place votes in the preseason poll of league head coaches. Drake University took the top spot in the poll, earning 35 points and five (5) first-place votes. Valpraso University ranked No. 3 (22 points), followed by Illinois State University and the University of Nebraska Omaha tied at No. 4 (19 points), Oral Roberts University at No. 5 (14 points) and South Dakota State University at No. 6 (5 points). Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team.

Ros was among eight (8) players named to the Summit League Players to Watch list. The Latisana, Italy native enters his first season with the Pioneers after holding a top-15 ranking in Italy for his age group, winning three (3) Italian national tournaments and earning a 2.4 ranking (group two (2) of four (4) top tiers) in the national rankings.

The Pioneers enter the 2017-2018 season as four-time defending conference champions. Denver finished with a 13-13 (4-0 Summit League) record last season, advancing to the first round of the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Five (5) players return from last season’s roster, while the team welcomes five (5) freshmen to the squad. Denver seeks to become the first Summit League team to win five consecutive tournament titles since 2002 (Oral Roberts) and is on a 20-game conference win streak, second-longest in league history.

Denver is set to open the 2017-2018 season on Jan. 19 at Lamar University.




The University of Denver is holding an alumni giving challenge for the 2017-2018 season in an effort to increase student-athlete alumni participation in the Denver Athletics Annual Fund.
