Freshmen Shine at 2018 National Collegiate Tennis Classic

The University of Denver men’s tennis team finished with a 10-4 record at the 2018 National Collegiate Tennis Classic played from Jan. 12-15 in Palm Desert, Calif.

Freshmen Mattia Ross, Matt Summers and Jorge Nuñez represented the Pioneers against Pepperdine University, the University of San Francisco and Boise State University.   

Ross and Nuñez led the Pioneers with a 3-1 record in singles play, while Summers recorded a 2-1 mark. Denver showed three (3) different combinations in three (3) doubles matches, finishing with a 2-1 record in those matches. Nuñez was a part of both winning pairings. Team highlights for Denver included beating Pepperdine and Boise State 3-0 in singles play.

The Pioneers will play their first dual match of the 2017-2018 season on Jan. 19 at Lamar University. Denver’s first home match is set for Feb. 10 against Air Force. Ross, Summers and Nuñez will be among five (5) freshmen on Denver’s roster as the Pioneers seek their fifth consecutive Summit League title and berth in the NCAA tournament.
