Pioneers Set to Open Spring Season in Texas

Jan. 18, 2018

DENVER -

The University of Denver men’s tennis team is set to open the 2017-2018 spring season with dual matches against Lamar University on Friday, Jan. 19 and the University of Texas at San Antonio (USTA) on Sunday, Jan. 21.

Denver enters this season following four (4) consecutive Summit League titles and four (4) consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament. The Pioneers return five (5) players from the 2016-2017 season where the squad finished with a 13-13 (4-0 Summit League) record. Among the key returners includes 2017 All-Summit League honoree Jesse Ruder-Hook who enters his senior season with a 31-11 (9-0 Summit League) doubles record. Senior Wyatt Lovera, junior Ignatius Castelino and sophomores Pedro Fernandez Del Valle and Sean Huynh will also help lead Denver.

“Our entire team has played a lot in the fall and during the winter break, posting good results along the way,” Denver coach Ricardo Rubio said.  “I am looking forward to seeing our team compete this weekend.”

Rubio enters his third season with the Pioneers after leading Denver to back-to-back league tiles and earning recognition as 2017 Summit League Coach of the Year.

“We have a very young team that is very talented,” Rubio said. “Lamar and UTSA will be very good tests for us.”

Aaron Diemer, Eric Morris, Jorge Nunez, Mattia Ros and Matt Summers will join the Pioneers as freshmen this season. Ros, a Latisana, Italy native, comes to Denver after holding a top-15 ranking in Italy for his age group, winning three (3) Italian national tournaments and earning a 2.4 ranking (group two (2) of four (4) top tiers) in the national rankings. He was among eight (8) players named to the Summit League Players to Watch List.

Denver’s first home match is set for Feb. 10 against the U.S. Air Force Academy. Summit League play will open when the Pioneers travel to Des Moines, Iowa to meet Drake University on Feb. 18. The Pioneers were ranked No. 2 in the 2018 Summit League Men’s Tennis Preseason Poll and received two (2) of seven (7) available first-place votes from league head coaches.
