Pioneers Finalize Regional Play in Provo

Oct. 22, 2017

PROVO, Utah – Just one week after the women battled in the ITA Regionals, the Denver men’s tennis team did the same, but this time on the campus of BYU.

DU competed hard in its second to last outing of the fall season, facing foes from all around the region including UNLV, Boise State and Northern Colorado.

Several Pioneers garnered first round wins, including Eric Morris, Sean Huynh, Pedro Fernandez Del Valle, Ignatius Castelino, Matt Summers, Aaron Diemer, and Wyatt Lovera.

Through round two, five Denver athletes made the cut as Morris won 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 over New Mexico State’s Mauricio Benitez, followed by Huynh taking out Ingacio Tejerina of Montana with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 score. Later Castelino beat Yannick Schmidl in a thriller, 7-6(8-6), 7-6(7-4), and Summers and Diemer advanced to face each other in the third round.

However, only Huynh and Summers would get past round three. Summers beat his teammate Diemer in 6-3, 6-4 fashion while Huynh got past UNLV’s Clayton Alenik 6-2, 6-2.

Through the fourth round, no Crimson and Gold representative was still standing.

In doubles play the teams of Jesse Ruder-Hook and Del Valle, Diemer and Castelino and Lovera and Huynh earned first round dubs. However, all three teams failed to advance past the second round, ending the squad’s shot for a doubles crown.

DU has one fall event remaining, the Gopher Invitational in Minneapolis on Nov. 3.
