Agent Issues

A student-athlete is not eligible for intercollegiate athletics competition if he or she has ever accepted money, transportation, or other benefits from an agent or his or her runner or agreed to have an agent market his or her athletics ability or reputation in that sport.

A student-athlete, as well as family and friends, can talk to agent candidates who call before the student-athlete's intercollegiate eligibility ends. However, a student-athlete may not sign a contract with an agent or agree verbally to be represented by an agent until after his or her eligibility has expired. Any contract not specifically limited in writing to a sport or particular sports shall be deemed applicable to all sports and the individual shall be ineligible to participate in any sport.

A student-athlete may consult with a lawyer regarding a proposed professional sports contract without losing his or her eligibility unless that lawyer also represents the student-athlete in negotiations.

If a student-athlete signs a contract with an agent, he or she immediately forfeits his or her remaining eligibility and must notify the Athletic Director within 72 hours. The student-athlete must also provide a copy of the contract to the Athletic Director.

See Colo. Rev. Stat. Ann. § 23-16-101 et. seq.

Any questions regarding agents should be directed to the Compliance Office.
