DENVER FALLS IN SEASON SERIES SPLIT WITH ORU
Pioneers Fall to Golden Eagles on Senior Day
Feb. 19, 2017
The Pioneers shot 39.3 percent on the game, going 22-of-56 from the floor. ORU was 37.7 percent from the floor, 23-of-61.
Denver was outrebounded on the afternoon, 44-31. Eighteen of ORU’s 44 boards were offensive, and the Golden Eagles used those boards to gather 15 second chance points.
Senior guard Jacqlyn Poss led the Pioneers in scoring for the eighth-straight match with 17 points.
Freshman guard Briana Johnson finished the afternoon just three points shy of a career-high with 14, including going 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Senior forward Jesse Spittel nearly claimed her second double-double of the season, collecting nine points and nine rebounds.
The Pioneers started the game strong, taking a 7-6 lead on a baseline jumper from Poss with just under six minutes to play in the first period.
ORU would end the quarter on a 13-3 run before Poss hit a deep buzzer-beater, bringing the score to 19-13 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 29-18 before freshman forward Madison Nelson knocked down a long jumper with six to play in the half, cutting the ORU lead to single digits at 29-20.
With three minutes to play in the half, junior forward Jordyn Alt would rip down the Pios’ miss and put it back up collecting two, cutting into the lead at 36-28.
DU would trail 42-30 going into the break.
Spittel started off a 4-0 Pio run with a spin move in the lane, bringing Denver within 11 with seven minutes to play in the third quarter.
The Pios would go on a scoring tear to end the third period, outscoring ORU 15-3 in the final three minutes of play.
Poss would cut the lead to four as a part of that run with under 30 seconds to play in the period at 53-49.
It would be Poss again right out of the gates in the fourth period, hitting the jumper and cutting the ORU lead to two at 54-52. That would be as close as Denver would get, as the Golden Eagles claimed a 7-2 run from that point, taking a seven point lead at 61-54 with 5:35 to play in the game.
Spittel would break that run, slicing to the basket and scoring two with five to go in the game, 61-56.
However, the Pioneers would be outscored 16-7 in the final quarter, and the Golden Eagles would lay claim to a 70-57 victory.
Denver hits the road this week for its final two games of the regular season. DU will play at South Dakota State on Thursday before closing out the regular season at Omaha on Saturday.
