Romanowski Heats Up For 24 in Pioneer Win

Nov. 4, 2017

- The University of Denver women's basketball team took on UC-Colorado Springs Saturday night in the squad's lone exhibition. The Pioneers ran away from the Mountain Lions in the second half, winning 80-64 in Hamilton Gymnasium.

Though it was head coach Jim Turgeon's first game at the helm for DU, the Mountain Lions were a familiar foe to the former CSU-Pueblo coach. In his two seasons with the ThunderWolves, Turgeon went undefeated against UCCS, going 2-0.

Denver had a dominant performance against UC-Colorado Springs in the exhibition contest. Leading the way was Samantha Romanowski, who tallied 24 points on 9-for-18 shooting from the field, highlighted by a 6-for-10 performance from behind the arc.

As a team, Denver shot 40.8 percent (29-for-71) from the field, including an impressive 43.2 from deep. Good ball movement played a key factor in the stellar shooting from 3, resulting in game-high 20 assists for the team.

Defense also played a big role in the Pioneers finding separation. For the night, DU picked up 12 steals and held the Mountain Lions to 36.1 percent shooting.

Claire Gritt had a memorable first outing for the Crimson and Gold, recording 15 points and five assists. The freshman showcased her all-around ability on the floor, setting up several teammates for good looks at the rim on numerous occasions.

Romanowski broke a 12-12 tie near the end of the first to give Denver a two-point edge.

Into the second, the Mountain Lions opened with back-to-back baskets to build a four-point advantage before a Lauren Loven 3 made it a one-point contest at the seven-minute mark.

Jordyn Alt brought the game back to even at 31 all with a pair of free throws with 1:20 until halftime. Romanowski drilled another 3-pointer late but UCCS tied it up at the break with a triple of their own.

The Pioneers really got the wheels turning in the third, starting with a Romanowski 3 that set the tone for the rest of the evening.

Romanowski's second trey in the third, as part of an 8-0 run, gave the Pioneers their first double-digit lead of the game at 45-34.

Also joining in on the third quarter 3 party was Madison Nelson and Gritt. The duo each connected from deep, helping extend the DU lead to 20.

UCCS cut the lead to 15 with just under four minutes to go in regulation but never came any closer than that, as the Crimson and Gold went on the grab the victory.

Denver will return to the court on Friday, as the Pioneers head south on I-25 to battle Air Force in the season opener. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. MT.
