Denver Lands Transfer Courtney Smith

May 15, 2018

DENVER – The University of Denver women’s basketball head coach Jim Turgeon announced the signing of sophomore transfer Courtney Smith on Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3 center and Thornton, Colo., native played the previous two and a half seasons at the University of Northern Colorado. While a Bear, Smith earned a pair of honors including Big Sky Player of the Week and 2015-16 Big Sky All-Academic Team.

“Courtney is an experienced NCAA Division I basketball player that has competed at a high level,” said Turgeon. “She fits perfectly in how we like our post players to play. She will be very successful in our system.”

In her first season at Northern Colorado, Smith took to the court in 26 games, averaging 12.8 minutes and 4.5 points per appearance.

In her sophomore campaign at UNC, Smith averaged 27.6 minutes and 14 points while her 5.9 rebounds led the team. Smith also led the team with a shooting percentage of 60.1, placing her 11th in the NCAA. In her second season, the center saw action in 28 contests, recorded three double-doubles, led the team with 37 blocks and recorded career-highs in points and rebounds, as she put up 28 points on Northern Arizona and 14 boards against Portland State.

Smith played and started in 17 games in 2017-18, as she averaged 13.2 points, 28.4 minutes and 5.1 rebounds per contest. She notched 20+ points on three occasions, including 26 on LSU.

In high school, Smith was a three-sport star for the Legacy Lighting, playing basketball, volleyball and tennis. She was named all-state for basketball three seasons in a row from 2013-2015 and was on the All-Region team in 2014 and 2015. Smith helped guide Legacy High School to a state title in 2012 and earned Academic All-State all four seasons.
