Pioneers Release 2017-18 Women's Basketball Schedule
Denver to host 13 home games in its 29-game schedule
Aug. 30, 2017
DENVER -- First-year head coach Jim Turgeon and the University of Denver women's basketball team released its 2017-18 schedule on Wednesday. The Crimson and Gold are scheduled to play 29 regular-season games, including 13 games in the Mile High City.
"I think we have inherited a challenging schedule for the upcoming season," said Turgeon.
The Pioneers tip-off the season with a trio of regional contests, traveling to Air Force (Nov. 10), before coming home for Northern Colorado (Nov. 12) and Wyoming (Nov. 16). Denver finishes the homestand with Chadron State on Nov. 22.
DU heads off to the state of California to take on a pair of Mid-American Conference teams, in Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24) and Miami (Ohio -- Nov. 25), before finishing the west coast trip against Cal State Fullerton (Nov. 27).
Denver rounds out November by hosting Colorado State on Nov. 30.
Turgeon believes the non-league schedule will be challenging to start the new campaign. "With six non-league road games and neutral site games against two good MAC teams, it really will test our team early in the season" he said.
In December, Denver welcomes Northern Arizona (Dec. 3) before heading east to face both UMBC and American on Dec. 7 and 9, respectively. DU starts Summit League play on the road at South Dakota on Dec. 30.
The Pioneers return to Denver in 2018 to face Utah Valley on Jan. 2 before getting back to league play on the road, starting with Fort Wayne Jan. 6.
Turgeon admits the schedule doesn't let up once league play begins saying, "we start the conference schedule with two road games in a league that is rated by some as a top 10 women's basketball conference in the country."
The Summit League schedule will be played over nine weeks (Dec. 30 -- Feb. 25) for a total of 56 games in a double round-robin format.
Denver then takes to Sioux Falls, S.D., for the 2018 Summit League Basketball Championships from March 3-6.
Three seniors will take the court for the Pioneers this season in Jordyn Alt, Sydney Koel and Ciera Morgan. The Crimson and Gold also will have two more upperclassmen in juniors Samantha Romanowski and Jahla Osborne.
DU will welcome five freshmen to the 2017-18 squad in Claire Gritt (Arlington Heights, Ill.), Jasmine Jeffcoat (Louisville, Colo.), Carie Weinman (Glenview, Ill.), Sidney Wentland (Elk River, Minn.) and Grace White (Redby, Minn.).
Loven and Romanowski delivered some firepower to the lineup last season, as the duo both averaged 10-plus points a game. The pair also made their presence felt behind the arc, as Loven shot 40.7 percent from three-point land while Romanowski shot 36.5 percent.
