No. 20 Pioneers Complete Day One of Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate

Feb. 18, 2018

NEW ORLEANS - The 20th-ranked University of Denver women's golf team opened up the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship on Sunday. The Pioneers shot a 27-over in the opening round.

Par was 72 at the 6,239-yard course at the English Turn Golf & Country Club.

No. 14 Florida took a one-stroke lead over No. 11 Michigan State through day one of the three-round event, carding a 5-under par.

Lindsay Kuhle went with the lineup of Sophie Newlove, Lauren Whyte, Mary Weinstein, Camille Enright and Jessica Dreesbeimdieke.

"Today was a tough day for DU," Kuhle said. "We started off well through three holes and got off to a good start, which was good to see the competitive juices flowing. We prepared well and had knowledge on the course and how we wanted to play the holes, but unfortunately it came down to our execution.

"We struggled on the execution of our wedges and chip shots around the greens and didn't have as many birdie opportunities as we would have liked. If we can come out tomorrow trusting the work we've put in and our games and compete with more confidence, we will have a good day and move up the leaderboard."

Whyte led the Crimson and Gold with a 5-over 77 in her first round on Sunday. The senior sits tied for 57th.

Weinstein shot a 6-over for the day, finishing off the round in a tie for 64th.

Dreesbeimdieke fired a 7-over in her first 18 holes.

Newlove and Enright each recorded an 81 in their opening rounds.

Round two of the tournament is set for Monday.
