Pioneers 8th through 36 Holes of Dick McGuire Invitational

Sept. 11, 2017

Albuquerque, N.M. - The University of Denver women's golf team got the start it was looking for to open the 2017-18 year, finishing eighth after two rounds of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational on Monday. The Pioneers posted a 7-over 583 at the UNM Championship Golf Course.

The University of New Mexico played host to the 18-team field, which featured seven teams in the final Golfstat top-25 rankings of last year.

Par for the course was 72.

Oklahoma State holds the team lead in the clubhouse after day one of the tournament. The Cowboys finished the day at 1-under, one stroke ahead of Arizona.

"Today was awesome," interim head coach Kolton Lapa said. "We got off to a great start. Our first round with Sophie shooting a 3-under-par was really exciting to see. It was also encouraging to see our newest member Mary post a good number in her first round at Denver. Lauren played great as well and they really carried us in that first round.

"I told the team that I am very proud of them. I feel like they kept their composure well throughout the very long day. We were in the lead or tied for the lead or just a few back all day, which is very exciting to watch. The team really played well and I am very excited and hopeful for a great fall season and a great year."

Senior Lauren Whyte had a day for DU, finishing up seventh with a 2-under 142 on the day. The St. Andrews, Scotland native fired a 1-over in her first 18, but shot a 69 in her final round on the afternoon.

Sophie Newlove wrapped up her first 36 holes tied for eighth at 1-under. She tied her career low with a 69 in the opening round on the morning.

Newcomer Mary Weinstein closed out her first two rounds for the Crimson and Gold tied for 38th.

Jessica Dreesbeimdieke sits tied for 66th at 7-over.

Camille Enright posted an 8-over in her 36 holes on Monday, good for a tie for 73rd

Maggie Cowart and Sonya Knebel, each competing as individuals, are tied for 79th and 96th respectively.

Final-round action is set for Tuesday.
