Pioneers Knock Off Four Top-25 Teams; Finish Sixth at Dick McGuire Invitational

Sept. 12, 2017

ALBUQUERQUE – The University of Denver women’s golf team dialed it up on Tuesday, jumping up two spots to take sixth at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. The Pioneers posted a three-round total of 878 (292-291-295), 14-over-par.

Par for the course was 72 at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.

The Crimson and Gold’s good day allowed them to finish ahead of four top-25 teams in the Golfweek preseason poll (No. 11 Texas, No. 14 Arizona, No. 22 California and No. 25 Pepperdine).

No. 24 Oklahoma State took home the team title with a score of 1-under 863, two strokes ahead of No.6 Northwestern.

“We had a great tournament,” interim head coach Kolton Lapa said. “I am super excited for all of the girls and very proud of Lauren and Sophie’s top-20 finishes. Camille came in really clutch for the team today. We really needed that even par from her and I am super excited for her and I know she is going to build a lot of confidence from today’s round.

“Overall, we beat some really good teams. I know this is only going to build the confidence going forward. That is all I am looking for, a confident group of girls who know they can win every event.”

Sophie Newlove made a jump on the final round of the tournament, finishing tied for 14th after shooting a 1-over 73 on the day.

Lauren Whyte wrapped up her tournament in a tie for 16th after going 3-over in her 18 holes on the afternoon.

Mary Weinstein closed out her tournament for DU tied for 39th after a 3-over performance in her final round of the two-day event.

Camille Enright bounced back in her last round, firing a team-low 72 for the round, putting her in a tie for 52nd.

Jessica Dreesbeimdieke ended her first tournament of the year in a tie for 74th.

Sonya Knebel and Maggie Cowart, each competing as individuals, placed 74th and 96th respectively.

Denver next will play host for the Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sept. 25 in Wolcott, Colo.
