Weinstein Goes Low as Denver Surges into Lead at Golfweek Conference Challenge

Sept. 26, 2017

WOLCOTT, Colo. – The University of Denver women’s golf team took over the leaderboard on Tuesday behind a dominant performance from sophomore Mary Weinstein. The Highlands Ranch native’s great day was part of a 3-over performance that put the Pioneers into the lead through 36 holes of the Golfweek Conference Challenge.

Par for the 6,216-yard course was 72 on the Fazio Course.

DU holds a four-shot advantage over Arizona in the 18-team field.

Interim head coach Kolton Lapa again went with the lineup of Sophie Newlove, Lauren Whyte, Mary Weinstein, Jessica Dreesbeimdieke and Camille Enright.

“The girls played incredible today,” Lapa said. “We really fought hard. We got off to an amazing start and the girls were under par for a long time today. Mary played at another level and came up clutch today. I couldn’t be happier for her.

“Camille really improved today. I was excited to see her get off to a great start and the girls were all in it. Everyone played with heart today and that’s all a coach could ask for. The girls will play like it’s another round of golf tomorrow. I love that this team is so confident, and like I have said all year, this team is special.”

Weinstein’s terrific day on the course led to a 6-under 66 for the round, jumping the super sophomore into second place through two rounds. The score of 66 is the lowest by a Denver player since Jessica Carty did it back in the first round of the Ron Moore Women’s intercollegiate back in 2015.

Whyte wrapped up day two in a tie for 18th after posting a 3-over 75 for her round on the day.

Both Newlove and Dreesbeimdieke each closed out their day in a tie for 39th with a 36-hole total of 151 (7-over).

Enright really bounced back from a tough outing on Monday to shoot a 2-over 74 on Tuesday, jumping her up into a tie for 64th.

Round three is set for tomorrow.
