Pioneers Deliver in Final Round; Win Golfweek Conference Challenge

Sept. 27, 2017

WOLCOTT, Colo. – The University of Denver women’s golf team delivered its biggest performance yet this year when it mattered most on Wednesday, firing a season-low 289 as a team to lock up the Golfweek Conference Challenge. The win gave the Pioneers their first victory of the 2017-18 campaign.

Par for the 6,216-yard course was 72 on the Fazio Course.

DU, who entered the last round with a four-stroke edge, held off an aggressive Pepperdine team to win by two strokes.

The Crimson and Gold have now been victorious in two of the last four tournaments that they have played in dating back to last season.

Denver’s big day on the course was the result of a total team effort from its lineup, highlighted by three players shooting par or better. The trio of Lauren Whyte (2-under), Sophie Newlove (1-under) and Jessica Dreesbeimdieke (even-par) had their respective games on point on the final day of play.

Whyte’s dominant round placed her in a tie for 11th on the year, her lowest finish so far in the fall season. The Scotland native racked up five birdies over her final 18 holes on the mountain course.

Newlove tied for 26th with her strong final-round showing, which was led by a team-best six birdies.

Mary Weinstein, who was the hero in round two with a 6-under, closed out her tournament in a tie for 15th at 2-over for a 54-hole total.

Dreesbeimdieke rebounded from a tough second round to post an even-par 72 on her scorecard on Wednesday, putting the senior in a tie for 32nd.

Camille Enright fired a 4-over 76 on her last day at the tournament, moving her in a tie for 71st.

The Pioneers will return to action when they host the Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate, beginning on Oct. 6. The three-day tournament will be held at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club.
