No. 26 Denver Goes Low; Delivers School-Record Round to Take Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate Title

Oct. 8, 2017

DENVER – Behind a pair of career days from seniors Lauren Whyte and Jessica Dreesbeimdieke, the 26th-ranked University of Denver women’s golf team won its second straight team title on Sunday at the Ron Moore Women’s Intercollegiate. The Pioneers finished with a team score of 849 (15-under).

The final-round 16-under 272 set a new school record for DU, highlighted by all four scores that counted being under par. The 15-under total tied a program record for 54-hole low total set back in 2006.

Par for the 6,450-yard course was 72 at the Highlands Ranch Golf Club.

The win made it two straight victories for the Crimson and Gold, who have now been victorious in three of their last five tournaments dating back to last season.

Oregon State’s Ellie Slama locked up the individual medalist honors with a final-day 5-under, bringing her total to 11-under for the tournament.

Interim head coach Kolton Lapa again showed his coaching prowess, getting the girls to bounce back after a tough 5-over performance from the team in round two.

Sophie Newlove picked up her first top-5 finish of the season, tying for fourth after another 3-under 69 on the day. She closed out her tournament with a 54-hole total of 7-under.

Both seniors Whyte and Dreesbeimdieke showcased their big-game ability, with each turning in career-best rounds on the afternoon to tie for 10th. The duo each dialed up their games on the back nine, making clutch hits and putts to give the team the separation it needed from the competitive field.

Mary Weinstein carded her best round of the tournament with a 2-under 70, putting her in a tie for 15th.

Camille Enright wrapped up her final 18 holes tied for 34th.

Maggie Cowart, Sonya Knebel, Anni Heck and Caroline Klemp also competed as their own team, ending in 14th.

Denver closes out the fall portion of its season with the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio, Texas on Oct. 22.
