Oct. 22, 2017

SAN ANTONIO – The No. 24 University of Denver women’s golf team put up a 9-over 297 in the first round of the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational on Sunday. The Pioneers finished out the day in ninth place in the 14-team field.

The 54-hole tournament was played at the Briggs Ranch Golf Club.

Par for the 6,450-yard course was 72.

Interim head coach Kolton Lapa went with the lineup of Sophie Newlove, Lauren Whyte, Mary Weinstein, Jessica Dreesbeimdieke and Camille Enright.

“Today was tough with the wind,” Lapa said. “I am very excited for tomorrow. We had a great practice and I know the girls are in good spirit. We are first off tomorrow and I think it will benefit our team for moving day.

“Lauren, Sophie and Mary continue their solid play which is great for our team. I know both Jess and Camille are ready to fire a low round tomorrow. We need to take better care of the par 5s and continue to stay patient and watch the putts falls for the Pios tomorrow.”

The trio of Whyte, Newlove and Weinstein each had impressive opening-round totals, firing a 1-over 73 resulting them being tied for 16th.

Dreesbeimdieke wrapped up her day tied for 51st with a 6-over round.

Enright sits tied for 58th at 7-over.
