Recap: Denver's terrific fall season

Jan. 23, 2018

DENVER - The University of Denver Women's golf team had a remarkable fall run, building on a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Regional and 51st overall ranking from last season.

DU set the tone early and established what kind of fall they were looking for with a sixth-place showing at the Dick McGuire Invitational, which always features a very talented field of teams.

The Pioneers then went back to back with team victories in the state of Colorado in late September and early October, first with the Golfweek Conference Challenge and then taking their own tournament, the Ron Moore Women's Intercollegiate.

DU closed out the fall season on a high note after taking fourth at the Maryb S. Kauth Invitational in San Antonio, Texas on Oct. 24, which featured several prominent teams including No. 1 Arkansas.

The Crimson and Gold were recognized for their stellar play this fall wrapping up the season ranked 20 in the NCAA by Golfstat.

Denver's terrific play has shown with its deep lineup, averaging 289.1 as a team score, the best in the Summit League by nearly 10 strokes. Senior Lauren Whyte and junior Sophie Newlove really elevated their games during the schedule, ranking 1-2 in the league scoring with Newlove first (72.1) and Whyte second (72.2).

Mary Weinstein also has made an impact in her fall season, finishing ranked fourth in the Summit League with a 72.6 scoring average.

The Pioneers open the spring portion of the season with a dual against NCAA Champion Arizona State on Jan. 28 in Gold Canyon, Ariz.
