Whyte Named #SummitWGF Golfer of the Week
Records second golfer of the week honor in her Denver career
Jan. 31, 2018
ELMHURST, Ill. – Senior Lauren Whyte started off the spring the right way, being named the Summit League Women’s Golfer of the Week on Wednesday. Whyte’s selection marks the first golfer of the week selection for Denver this spring.
The Scotland native was key in the 20th-ranked Pioneers strong start last Saturday against defending NCAA Champion, No. 6 Arizona State. DU fell by just one stroke to the Sun Devils, 298-299.
“Lauren had a tremendous round on Sunday in difficult conditions,” said head coach Lindsay Kuhle. “The wind was blowing consistently at 15 mph and we had some tough hole locations. To be able to come out of the offseason with great confidence shows how hard Lauren has worked on her game.
“Having a hole-in-one on the eighth hole from 160 [yards] out with a six iron, and many birdie opportunities speaks to her ball-striking and how consistently she has been hitting the ball and scoring for our team.
“This is a well-deserved honor for Lauren and I am proud of her competitiveness, work ethic, and leadership she has brought to this team again this spring season," Kuhle added.
Whyte shot a 1-over 73 in the 18-hole dual between the two teams, highlighted by a hole-in-one on the eighth hole.
“It’s a great feeling to be able to start the season off with this achievement,” Whyte said. “It only increases my motivation to work hard for this team so we can continue to build on the success we had in the fall.”
The Pioneers head south for their first spring tournament, the Allstate Sugar Bowl Invitational Championship on Feb. 18 in New Orleans.
