Weinstein Named Newcomer of the Year by Summit League

June 8, 2018

SUMMIT LEAGUE RELEASE

ELMHURST, Ill. – University of Denver women’s golf sophomore Mary Weinstein was named Summit League Newcomer of the Year on Friday by the league. Weinstein was part of the end-of-year awards that the league announced in a release.

Weinstein made an impact in her first year with the Pioneers, finishing second on the team in scoring average at 73.81, which ranked fourth league wide. The Highlands Ranch native also was a first-team All-Summit League selection for 2017-18.

“Congrats to Mary on this well-deserved honor,” head coach Lindsay Kuhle said. “Mary came into this program this past year and made an immediate impact. Her stroke average this fall was incredible at just over 72. Shooting a 66 at Red Sky and contributing to almost every round this fall and into the spring season helped our team make tremendous strides this past season.

“Her dedication and leadership both on and off the golf course is something that everyone on our team admires and looks up to. She is hard-working, focused, and a very confident player and has proven herself at the Division 1 national level and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Weinstein finished the year with 10 rounds of par-or-better, second on the team. The former Regis standout recorded two top-five finishes in her debut season with the Crimson and Gold. She also tied the low round of the year on the team with a 6-under 66 in the second round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge back on Sept. 26.

The Pioneers will return to the course in the fall.
