DENVER -- The University of Denver swept the first Big 12 Conference weekly awards of the 2018 season, the conference announced on Monday. Sophomore Maddie Karr (Stillwater, Minn.) was named Gymnast of the Week; junior Kaitlyn Schou (Orlando, Fla.) earned Event Specialist of the Week; and freshman Lynnzee Brown (Kansas City, Mo.) was recognized as Newcomer of the Week.
This is the first time DU has swept the weekly Big 12 awards since Denver became an affiliate member of the conference in 2016.
Karr's Gymnast of the Week honor comes after she won the all-around (39.500), vault (9.925) and beam (9.900) titles during Saturday's season opener at Arizona. She also tied for second on bars (9.850). Her vault score was the highest in the nation, and she is currently ranked No. 1 in the country on the event. The DU sophomore's marks on vault, bars and beam, and in the all-around were the highest in the conference last week.
This is the third time Karr has earned Big 12 Gymnast of the Week honors, and it is the fourth overall weekly conference award in her career.
Schou earned Event Specialist of the Week after competing on beam and floor on Saturday, finishing second on beam. Her beam tally of 9.875 was just .025 off her career high. She is tied for No. 12 in the nation on beam after last week's meet, and she is also tied for No. 2 on the event in the conference. Additionally, she led off the Pioneers' floor rotation, helping DU to the third-highest score on the event in a season opener.
This is Schou's first career weekly conference honor.
Brown, this week's Newcomer of the Week, had one of the most successful collegiate debuts for a DU freshman, winning the floor title and finishing second in the all-around and on vault. Her all-around score of 39.425 is the second-best in a DU freshman's first meet, as was her 9.900 on vault. Nationally, Brown is now No. 2 on vault, tied for No. 6 on floor and No. 7 in the all-around. She is also No. 2 in the Big 12 in the all-around and on floor.
This is Brown's first career weekly conference honor.
Denver next competes on Sunday, January 14, against Air Force in DU's home opener. The meet is set for 2 p.m. in Magness Arena.
