DENVER – University of Denver gymnastics senior Leah Lomonte (Katy, Texas) was named the 2017 Big 12 Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference announced on Thursday. A psychology major, Lomonte holds the highest cumulative GPA in the conference (3.86).

Earlier this season, Lomonte was named a first-team honoree on the Academic All-Big 12 Team. She returned to competition as a bars specialist in 2017 after missing the entire 2016 season with an injury. This season, she competed on bars in every meet, setting a career high of 9.900 on March 4 and was named the Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week for the week of March 6.

To be eligible for Scholar-Athlete of the Year, student-athletes must be a junior or senior, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 and participate in at least 60 percent of the team’s competitions. The conference’s head coaches vote on the nominees and cannot vote for their own student-athlete.

Lomonte will join the Pioneers as they compete at the 2017 NCAA National Championship in Semifinal I on Friday, April 14, in St. Louis.
